How to Report a Locksmith Scam
Guidelines for documenting a suspected locksmith scam, locksmith fraud, or emergency locksmith overcharging.
Before starting your intake submission, you can read our Locksmith Scam Guide or consult our Locksmith Cost Guide to check typical pricing benchmarks.
Ready to document an incident?
Our Case Intake wizard takes about 5–10 minutes to complete.
How do I report a locksmith?
You can file a formal documentation case by using the Unlokt Trust Case Intake portal. You will need to identify the locksmith company, outline what occurred, select specific events (like lock drilling or overcharging), and upload supporting evidence.
When should I submit a report?
You should submit a case report if you experienced suspected locksmith scams, misleading pricing, identity misrepresentation, or overcharging. Common scam indicators include:
- Misleading Pricing & Overcharging: Being quoted a lowball fee (e.g., $15 or $29) but forced to pay hundreds of dollars on-site.
- Identity Misrepresentation: Unmarked vehicles or technicians operating under a fake company name or shell directory profile that does not match their online listing.
- Bait-and-Switch Tactics: Being promised standard pick entry but having locks drilled out without consent, followed by an aggressive upsell for replacement hardware.
What evidence should I gather?
Solid documentation ensures a higher trust verification score. We suggest collecting:
- Physical or digital receipts and invoice sheets.
- Screenshots of local listings, map cards, or phone numbers advertised.
- Call logs showing durations, or text messages detailing quotes.
- Photos of any drilled lock mechanisms or property damage.
Is my report immediately public?
No. All submissions are private at the time of entry. Unlokt moderators manually review each case file to redact personally identifiable information (PII)—including victim names, exact residential street addresses, and credit card numbers—before any status matches are registered to local business directories.
What happens after I submit?
Once verified, the report is matched to a directory profile. Unlokt will contact the locksmith if verified business communication endpoints exist to notify them of the documentation.
Can the locksmith respond later?
Yes. Locksmith owners can review matched case reports and submit a resolution statement or correction response. Unlokt believes in maintaining a neutral, fair ledger for all parties involved.
